There are indeed pockets of paradise on earth.
Two days after wedding, we were fortunate to prolong the jubilance a bit further with a honeymoon in Providenciales, Turks & Caicos.
The Caribbean, to this point, was one of this world's regions I had not experienced in person (and technically the water here is the Atlantic). Flying in was quite a remarkable site in itself; with an aerial view of the vibrant waters, it was like a shimmering topaz smiling up to the sky. The islands themselves are home to over 31,000 residents, and attract 1+ million people each year.
After checking through customs (45 minutes--I've had worse) we headed straight for our resort--Blue Haven. I'm sure there are incredible resorts throughout T&C, but if I could just take a quick second; the staff were some of the most friendly, courteous and helpful I've had for an all-inclusive trip. Each of them took time to provide thorough information within each aspect of their resort, as well as wonderful recommendations outside.
Our room was nothing short of palatial, and the resort had many splendid amenities you'd hope for, (swim up bar, boating activities, incredible food) but the real kicker were some of the smaller perks. One we especially loved were complimentary bikes to take leisure strolls through the city of Providenciales (and to their sister resort). With the wind at our backs, and palm trees swaying from our peripheral, we were able to mingle with local residents/proprietors and learn a little more about the culture, history and foods. EASILY the best jerk-chicken I've ever tasted in my life
When getting into the waters of T&C, one thing you won't have to do is fight shivering at first. The water averages around 80 degrees Fahrenheit; which might make you looking for some bath beads and a candle to light instead.
One of the activities we selected was a catamaran tour with snorkeling and a trip to Half Moon Bay's Iguana Island. As excited as we were for the day, no trip goes uninterrupted without a hitch...
Prior to hopping in the water to snorkel, I stopped into the bathroom of the boat for a quick #1. If you have ever used a bathroom on a boat, you know it's like using one on an airplane. Compacted for space, I haphazardly (maybe had a few margaritas earlier in the da) tugged the drawstring of my swimming trunks and my middle finger got caught in the waistband and when I pulled my hand out, my finger stayed. The tip of my finger looked like it dislocated, bent at the tip, but I wasn't in any pain, so ferociously tried putting it back in place. When I couldn't I asked if anyone already in the water was a doctor. There was fortunately a physician who got out and looked at my finger. To my relief he told me my finger was dislocated. to my despair he told me I ruptured the tendon in my finger and it would need to be repaired with surgery. FUN STUFF!
Nothing I could do about it at this point. The workers on the boat quickly grabbed a plastic fork and tape, and fashioned a brace for my finger rest straight. I enjoyed the rest of the day as just a spectator/photographer.
Half Moon Bay was a beautiful pit stop during our tour. Although known for being an island hosting numerous Iguanas, the first thing we saw was a baby shark swimming near our toes. (I remained in the sand afterwards)
The Rock Iguana (Cyclura Carinata) is the largest non-extinct land animal found in T&C. They used to live throughout the islands, but the introduction of tourism, cats and dogs led to them becoming critically endangered; it is estimated there are about 50,000 Rock Iguanas left in existence. The iguanas themselves can approach 2.5 ft. in length with shades of green, brown and gray. Although we saw several of them from Half Moon Bay, there is said to be even more at adjacent Little Water Cay.
God continually blesses us with wonderful experiences and we were extremely grateful to enjoy this time as newlyweds. I could write about so much more on this trip, and fair to say, we would go back in 2 seconds, but I've reached my limit in keystrokes with a damaged finger...until then, I'm comin' home, baby!
